The In-Port Watch on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier in the Sixties

“Messenger!”

“Messenger, aye.”

“Go down to the wardroom with the tray, get clean cups and glasses, bring back fresh coffee and water, and if there are any rolls or cookies, bring them back too.”  Well, watch teams get hungry, too!

“Aye, aye, sir.” And away he goes.

“Boats, have all the security watches reported in to you?”

“Yes, sir, and gunnery reports the magazines are all normal.”

“Very well.”

So far, so good, you think to yourself. But then again, some of the most innocent watches can turn to worms in nothing flat.

”Sir, Lima 1 says they need a working party to clean up fleet landing.”

Lima 1 is the shore patrol beach guard unit. They have a portable transmitter and receiver and call CIC on harbor common when they need any men, equipment or to relay important information.

“Very well, call the Chief on the after brow and tell him to muster five men from the working division and to send them on the next U-boat.”

“Yes, sir!”
